Sylt’s east coast offers a unique area of unspoiled nature: the Wadden Sea. Because of high and low tide the mudflat is 6 hours flooded and 6 hours free of water.

At the first glance the Wadden Sea may appear as an endless and lifeless grey mud dessert, but the diversity of life is amazing: there are up to two million organisms in a square metre. Scientists have discovered that there is more life in a square metre of the Wadden Sea than in the rainforest. The plants in the Wadden Sea have to be very robust, due to the permanent salty environment they live in, similar to the cacti in the desert. The mudflat offers food for almost all creatures. It is also a nursery for fish and breeding and resting area for birds.

Tourists can learn more about the unique area during one of the numerous guided tours through the mudflat, organised by the “Schutzstation Wattenmeer”
