The stars on display are a result of the voluntary German classification of accommodations offered by several associations.

According to the kind of business of the accommodation either the criteria of the German Hotel Classification, the German Classification for Boardinghouses/Guesthouses (G classification) or the Classification of the German Tourism Association for holiday flats and apartments (DTV classification) are used.

Accommodations without stars have not yet taken part in a voluntary classification. The absence of stars is not a reflection of the standard offered in such hotels.
